I was getting a strange feeling in my gut before Redshirt hit the stage this past Friday night at Mickey Finn’s. It might have been from the brewery beer I was drinking, but I believe it was the notion that I was going to see something special happen. Redshirt started their performance off with the radio friendly tune “Single Mom”, which led into the uplifting “Keep On”. The next song on the docket was their newest creation “Yes Today”. It was only the second time they had performed this song in front of a live crowd and it seemed from what I observed that the people embraced it. “I Don’t Know” and “Story” followed, which led into the depressing, but riveting “Giver of Pain”. Some dancing broke out during this that left me speechless. “Find Your Way”, “Shadow the Sun”, “The Call”, “What I’m Told” and “My Anywhere” followed, which led to the only cover of the night “Murder by Numbers” by The Police. I am not a big fan of original bands during covers, but I will make an exception because it’s so well done and completely different from The Police’s version. Jon Bryan’s haunting vocals, Pat Donahoe’s brilliant guitar work, Danny Weymouth’s undeniable bass playing and Matt Koller’s pulse-pounding drum action makes this a crowd pleaser. The second newest creation “Nothings Changed” was next, followed by “Analyze Me”. Redshirt finished off their set with my request “Live Forever” and it didn’t disappoint. This song has become my own personal anthem. I was very honored that they chose to close the night with it. The time has come for my final verdict and I would have to give Redshirt’s performance 4.5 Woodchucks out of 5. No woodchucks were harmed during this review.
