Words can’t describe what went down last night at Point’s East Pub in Milwaukee during Redshirt’s performance, but I will give it a try. The night began with Redshirt’s regular bass player Danny Weymouth nowhere to be found. I thought he was missing in action, but before Redshirt hit the stage I learned that Danny had to work and Terry (CIA would not allow me to release his last name) was his replacement. He was given about 4 hours notice that they needed him to play. The set began, like their Mickey Finn’s performance last week with “Single Mom”, “Keep On”, “I Don’t Know” and “Story”. Redshirt then played that rock anthem “Find Your Way”, which led to “What I’m Told” and “My Anywhere”. Then after that, all the strange stuff started to happen. Lead singer Jon Bryan with guitar in hand, came on stage and played his solo song “Tomorrow is Another Day”, which then led to him being joined on stage by drummer Matt Koller, pounding the Djembe, while he sang “Giver of Pain”. Half way through the song, guitarist Pat Donahoe decided to strap on the guitar and join in, which led to the full band jamming out to The Police’s “Murder By Numbers” and “The Call”. Jon then announces to the crowd that the band is going to make a new song on the fly. In my opinion, the new song wasn’t half bad. After that, Pat joined Jon on stage and while he played the guitar, Jon blasted out “Shadow the Sun” and “Live Forever." The finale saw Jon and Pat joined by roadie Jozzy on drums and they finished the set off with “Nothings Changed”. I have seen Redshirt play over and over, but last night was something special. They cut loose and just had fun. Terry did a great job filling in for Danny. In the end, 5 Woodchucks will be awarded because it’s a set I don’t believe anyone will see again. For those who didn’t venture out to Milwaukee, you missed a once in a lifetime performance. My trip to Milwaukee was whole different story and that will have to wait for another day.
